Women’s Volleyball Falls in District J Tournament

Council Bluffs, IA – Despite a stellar season where the VU Women’s Volleyball team managed to climb to a 20th national ranking, and beating multiple highly ranked teams, they fell in the District J Tournament this past weekend.

The Lady Trailblazers opened the tournament by drawing the host school and #1 seed Iowa Western. They outhustled Iowa Western in the digs column, out-digging the Reivers 42-40.  However a depleted line-up due to injuries ultimately led to Vincennes falling to Iowa Western in straight sets: 25-11, 25-12, 25-14.

The Lady Trailblazers Volleyball Team had a chance to rebound Friday evening against #3 seed Marshalltown, and took full advantage. VU came out with great energy, and managed to win the first two sets 25-18 & 25-22. However, the Marshalltown Tigers stormed back in the 3rd to take the set 25-20, and making the match score 2-1 in favor of Vincennes. Finally, in a nail biter 4th set, VU pulled out a gutsy win by eclipsing the Tigers 25-22, and 3-1 for the match. The win secured the Lady Trailblazers a match up with #2 seed Indian Hills on Saturday morning.

Despite riding high on emotion coming off of a big victory the night prior against Marshalltown, the injuries combined with the skill and depth of Indian Hills proved to be too much for the Lady Trailblazers as they lost in straight sets: 25-21, 25-17, 25-16.

After the tournament, Coach Gary Sien had this to say about his team, “We played hard, but with a depleted line-up, Indian Hills proved to be too much.  We had a great first year in DI, we captured a number of big wins against ranked programs, we managed to be ranked as high as 20th nationally, and finished with a season record of 29-9.”. He also raved about how great the Sophomore leadership had been thought the entire season, and how a great deal of the success of this team this year rode on the shoulders of that leadership. Congrats on a great season Lady Trailblazers!

He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
