Yeryar homers in VU Baseball's season-opening win; Blazers split DH at WGT

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The Vincennes University Blazer Baseball Team split its season-opening doubleheader Saturday at West Georgia Tech in Carrollton, GA, when the Trailblazers claimed Game 1, 8-2, before dropping the second game, 4-1.

GAME 1:
The Trailblazers rapped out 10 hits and scored five runs over the third and fourth innings in Game 1. The VU offense was keyed by sophomore Brett Yeryar's home run. In addition to Yeryar's round-tripper, sophomore Lane Dransfield went 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored, freshman Mason Bruce was 3-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a sacrifice fly and freshman Cade Luker was 2-for-4 with a run and a run driven in.

Meanwhile, on the mound for VU, sophomore Jordan Young got his season under way with the start and he went 3.1 innings of three-hit baseball with four strikeouts and a walk. He yielded two earned runs. Young gave way to freshman Braxton Yeryar, who turned in 3.2 innings of scoreless work for the victory. Yeryar (1-0) gave up two hits and struck out four. He also walked one hitter.

GAME 2:
In the second game, Brett Yeryar was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored, while sophomore Grant Buckley drove in the lone run and turned in a 1-for-3 day at the plate. Although the Trailblazers out-hit West Georgia Tech 8-3, VU committed three errors to account for two of the host's runs.

The Trailblazers' Game 2 starter, freshman Pete Wissel, absorbed the loss despite the fact that neither of the Golden Knights' runs scored during his four innings was earned. Wissel (0-1) struck out four and issued five bases on balls. Wissel was relieved by sophomore Andrew Sparks who gave up three hits and fanned a batter in 1.1 innings. Freshman Lucas Fagg then finished up with two-thirds of an inning. He struck out one hitter.

VU (1-1) will hit the field again Sunday with a nine-inning contest vs. West Georgia Tech. First pitch will be at 12:35 p.m.
