Attendance Guidance

  • Attendance Guidance for Faculty

  • Require consistent seating for students in face-to-face meetings.  Explain to students that this will aid in contact tracing should the need arise.

  • Begin face-to-face classes with a reminder to the entire class that all students should monitor their health daily.  Remind the entire class that any student experiencing COVID-19 or flu-like symptoms should not be attending classes.

  • Remind students that if they test positive for COVID-19 or have been quarantined by a healthcare professional due to primary exposure to a positive case, they should call the VU COVID-19 hotline at 812.888.4911 to talk with a professional about next steps. 

  • Clearly establish how you want students to contact you if they are absent from class.  Emphasize the importance of clear and prompt communication.

  • Be flexible with TAPS.  Record all absences, but be flexible when issuing TAPS warnings.  Some students may be required to self-isolate for two weeks.

  • Be flexible in accepting late and make-up work.  Absences should not be treated in a punitive manner.

  • Reconsider requiring attendance as part of the final grade.  Consider, instead, requiring participation as part of the final grade.  Be prepared for alternative ways of making up for absences (e.g., requiring a summary of required reading to make up for a missed in-class quiz or activity).

  • Before dropping a student for non-attendance, attempt to contact the student in multiple ways (email, phone, text, Remind, etc.), and consult the Dean of Students concerning absences.  Students should be warned via TAPS twice (Warning 1, Warning 2) before being dropped.​​​​​​​​​​​
