Delaware Co. commissioners salute VU Veterans Upward Bound

July 21, 2017 / Delaware County commissioners salute Veterans Upward Bound, Vincennes University

MUNCIE, Ind. - July 17 was designated “Veterans Upward Bound, Vincennes University and Delaware County Veteran Affairs Day” by an act of the Delaware County Commissioners.

Veterans Upward Bound, Vincennes University provides free academic services to assist veterans to enter and to complete a college or other postsecondary training program of the veteran’s choice, helping thousands of veterans in Indiana since 1979 and hundreds of veterans in Delaware County since 2000 to achieve their higher education goals.

Adopted by the County Commissioners on July 17, the resolution notes that Veterans Upward Bound, Vincennes University has helped more veterans during this grant cycle than any other county served by the Veterans Upward Bound Grant in Indiana. The program works in partnership with the Delaware County Veterans Service Office, Delaware County Veterans Drug Diversion Court, Work-One, Veterans Affairs, Muncie Mission, Muncie Community Schools Adult Basic Education, Ivy Tech Community College, and Ball State University.

Veterans Upward Bound, Vincennes University has co-located its office with the Delaware County Veterans Service Office, in collaboration with the Delaware County Commissioners, enabling greater services and support to Delaware County veterans. The resolution states, “Delaware County is leading the way in the State of Indiana.”

Veterans Upward Bound, Vincennes University is a program funded by the U.S. Department of Education and is the only Veterans Upward Bound Program in the State of Indiana.

"Vincennes University is honored to be the only college in Indiana providing services through the Veterans Upward Bound program. Through VU's commitment with the Veterans Upward Bound program, the University provides free educational services for academically and financially disadvantaged military veterans, with the goal of postsecondary enrollment," said Matthew J. Schwartz, assistant vice president of the VU Division of Outreach and Engagement, College of Extended Studies.

Veterans Upward Bound, Vincennes University has helped 74 veterans begin their education during this grant cycle, making Delaware County number one among all counties in Indiana in veterans served by the Veterans Upward Bound Grant.

The Veterans Upward Bound, Vincennes University Muncie Office is located at 100 West Main Street, Room 209A, Delaware County Building, Muncie, IN 47305. The program also has an office in Indianapolis with nine Indiana counties served.
