Education Mathematics (BA)
Bachelor of Arts
Secondary mathematics teachers continue to be in high demand, which allows you flexibility in deciding where you choose to teach and live. VU has a 100% job placement rate over the last four years for program graduates who have obtained licensure and seek employment in education. Because the Mathematics Education program offers rigorous mathematical content comparable to what is found in a pure mathematics degree program at other universities, graduates may also use their VU degree as a stepping-stone to other math-intensive fields or graduate school programs.
About This Degree
With VU’s Mathematics Education Program, students can complete a four-year bachelor’s degree (BS or BA) at VU. Program graduates are eligible to take the Indiana licensure examination for licensure as mathematics teachers for grades 5-12. Indiana has reciprocal licensure agreements with over 30 other states.
VU’s Mathematics Education program is extremely affordable compared to other teacher preparation programs in the state, and Illinois students pay the reduced-cost Indiana in-state tuition rates. Program scholarships are available. Contact the Program Coordinator for scholarship information.
VU Gets You Into the Classroom
At VU, small class sizes allow you to receive personalized attention from faculty. All full-time Education Department faculty and the Mathematics Education Program Coordinator have K-12 teaching experience. These faculty members serve as your supervisors as you gain experience and develop your teaching skills.
With over 120 hours of field experience before student teaching, you will be prepared to teach, engage, and motivate your future students. Field experience and student teaching includes both middle and high school classrooms to prepare you for employment at whichever grade levels interest you most.
In addition to the field experiences which are part of your VU program courses, you will have additional opportunities to gain teaching experience and build your resume’. Many students in the Mathematics Education program are employed part-time as tutors in the Science, Engineering, & Mathematics Learning Lab. This provides an opportunity for students to gain valuable experience assisting fellow students while developing good communication skills.
