Da Silva Captures Little State Crown to Lead Trailblazers at Intercollegiates

West Lafayette, IN – Sophomore Anais Da Silva continued her record-breaking career at Vincennes University by adding Intercollegiate Little State Individual Champion to the long list of accolades she has garnered in her 2 years by being the first non-DI finisher for the 6,000 meter race in very hot and hilly conditions at Purdue University this weekend.

As the runners toed the line at the Purdue University cross country course, the thermometer read “87 degrees”. The runners steadied as the starter raised the gun in the air, and with a shot of the starter’s pistol, they were off. Da Silva immediately shot to the front, and settled into the chase pack.

Da Silva held tight for most of the race, and was able to battle hard to the line. She finished 8th overall in a race that included almost all of the Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA, and NJCAA member schools in the state of Indiana. She was the first runner to cross the line from a Non-Division I school, winning the Little State Individual Crown. Da Silva becomes the first ever athlete in Vincennes University history to do so.

However, she wasn’t the only Trailblazer to have a big day. Sophomore Sydney Davidson finished 39th overall, 14th in the little state Division. Sophomores Wendy Catalan and Nacketa Scanlon finished 57th (27th in little state) & 59th (29th in little state) respectively. While freshman Liz Bredeweg finished 63rd overall (33rd in little state) to round out the top 5.

Coach Blake Albrecht said after the race, “I was really impressed with our toughness in the middle of the race. It was really hot, it was hilly, and the footing wasn’t great. We suffered some with the heat and humidity, but it was a good building point for us, and will make us tougher later in the season. Anais ran really well. Especially considering that she really only has had 2 weeks of actual workouts since coming off of time-down. We also were without Maisie who had some issues with the heat today. She would have easily been top 5 in little state, and top 25 finisher without a doubt.”

The Trailblazers will return to action Saturday, September 30th at the Greater Louisville Classic hosted by the University of Lousiville. Race time is set for Noon EST!

At VU, we believe sports play an important role in the overall purpose of an educational institution. We support a well-rounded intercollegiate sports program for both men and women and have a strong presence in the NJCAA where we can claim several national championships. But we are equally proud of our individual All-American and All-American Academic athletes who have used their talent to continue their education at four-year colleges.
