VUVB Remains Unbeaten after Perfect 4-and-0 weekend at Owens Express Invite

Perrysburg, OH – The Vincennes University Volleyball team moved to a perfect 7-and-0 overall record, 21-and-0 in sets this season, after picking up a pair of wins on day 2 of the Owens Express Invitational against Edison & Lansing.

After picking up wins on day 1 against Muskegon and Jackson, the Trailblazers started off day 2 with a match against Edison Community College. Coach Sien said after the match, “We served great. We had 11 service aces. That serving really took a tall Edison team out of their offensive rhythm.”. The Lady Blazers rolled to win in straight sets: 25-16, 25-14, 25-18.

Sophomores Erica Kik and Gabrielle Medrado led VUVB in kills with 8 & 9 respectively. Medrado and Sophomore Cali Toploski both had 15 set assists. Toploski would add 4 service aces, and Freshman Mackenzie Haworth had 6. Baylee Lipincott led the team with 3 blocks, while Hannah Bullock and Abby Bigler tallied 17 and 13 digs.

The Lady Blazers had a quick turnaround for the 2nd and final game of the Owens Express Invitational, however, that did not keep the Trailblazers from toppling the Stars of Lansing Community College in straight sets: 25-15, 25-20, 25-19.

Sophomore Genesis Millisde and Freshman Brooke Lasher had 10 & 8 kills a-piece. Sophomores Gabrielle Medrado and Cali Toploski again ratcheted up double-digit set assists with 21 and 10 respectively. Mackenzie Haworth added 3 services aces, Millisde had 4 blocks, and Sophomore Hannah Bullock racked up 21 digs.

Coach Sien said of the match against Lansing, “We had some trouble overcoming our own errors and a tough, quick squad from Lansing. In set 3, we made a number of errors while they played nearly perfect. We were down 13-17 before finding our aggressiveness on serving and transition offense to win 25-20. We could not have asked for a better showing at this tournament as we face 4 DI (2 are ranked) teams next week.”

The Lady Blazers will look to continue their unbeaten start to the 2017 campaign at Kaskaskia at 7 p.m., against Kaskaskia. Be sure to support your Trailblazers!
