Counseling: confidentiality

The Counseling Office has a strong commitment to maintaining the confidentiality of the information shared by students. The Office complies with both state and federal laws regarding confidentiality as well as the ethical standards set forth by the National Association of Social Workers. Information discussed in counseling sessions customarily remains confidential unless the student indicates in writing that they wish the information to be communicated to a specific person or office outside the Counseling Office.

Indiana law does require certain exceptions to confidentiality. For instance, counselors are required to report suspected abuse or neglect of children or of people who have been determined to be incapacitated as a result of an illness, injury, or disability and to make appropriate notifications when there is imminent risk to physical health or safety. No record of counseling is made in academic transcripts. A confidential file separate from the academic record is established and maintained within the Counseling Office, and no information is released to anyone, including faculty, administration, or parents, without written consent.

The Counseling Office is committed to the highest standards of ethical practice. The counselor strives to provide a counseling experience that assists students in the development of their potential in an atmosphere that recognizes diversity and freedom of individual choice.
