VINCENNES, Ind. – For Hope Laughlin, her dreams of becoming an occupational therapist are closer to coming true.

The Olney, Illinois native received her associate degree on Saturday, April 29, in one of Vincennes University’s newest programs of study: Exercise Science.

“It is exciting for the Kinesiology and Sport program to have students enrolling in the Exercise Science degree,” VU Assistant Professor Misty Bohnert said. “We created this degree track to provide an opportunity for students who want to begin their educational journey at Vincennes University and want a transfer pathway from VU into the various fields of study.”

Graduates of VU's Exercise Science program like Laughlin transfer into programs such as sports medicine, athletic training, and cardiac rehab or programs focused on human movement and motion. Graduates also have opportunities to pursue careers in health clubs and fitness-related industries.

With her degree in hand, Laughlin is putting Midwest winters behind her and heading south. She is transferring to Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where she plans to earn her bachelor’s degree.

Laughlin also has plans to add to her resume by obtaining a master's degree.

“I want to reside down south and work as an occupational therapist at a high-level athletic college or for a professional sports team,” she said.

She knows first-hand about college sports. The distance runner competes in two sports for the Trailblazers.

“I chose VU because I wanted to run track and cross country in college, and because of the great education programs and facilities,” Laughlin said.

She plans to compete in both sports at Nova Southeastern.

Laughlin is a Trailblazer in many ways. She wears a Trailblazer uniform, is a VU alum, and is among the first graduates of the VU Exercise Science Program. She could not be more proud.
