Jessie Davis, M. Ed, serves as Assistant Professor in Family and Consumer Sciences. She teaches courses in Child Development as well as Marriage and Family studies. Her love of education began in her own early years as a student. In the third grade, she remembers thinking "the classroom is the place for me."
After graduating with a B.A. in Elementary and Special Education, she went on to teach at the elementary level. During that time, she obtained a Master's in Education with a focus in Curriculum and Instruction. Her years spent teaching Kindergarten students serve as a valuable platform for instructing students in childhood development and pedagogy. While teaching at VU, she has been pursuing a PhD in Health Psychology. Her studies in human development across the lifespan as well as health-related behaviors have been points of focus in her classrooms.
Jessie is a member of NAEYC (the National Association for the Education of Young Children), NEA (National Education Association), PCCASI (Professional Child Care Association of Southern Indiana), and IPL (International Play Association).
In the classroom, practicing what she preaches is important--learning through experience. She believes that experience is the best teacher in life, and without experiences, minimal understanding can be gained. She partners with early childhood organizations in the community including PACE (Head Start), KCARC Children's Civitan Center, Vincennes Community School Corporation, the Indiana Association for Child Care Resource and Referral, Toyota Children's Center, as well as various home daycares and ministries in order to provide learning experiences for both VU students and the children in these programs.
When not teaching, Jessie enjoys spending quality time with her three children. Cooking dinner as a family and bike rides in the evening are some of her favorite family activities. She also enjoys writing and journaling as well as reading up on fitness, nutrition, and current events.
