September 9, 2019 / Kuharic reception, talk rescheduled for Sept. 13 at Shircliff Gallery of Art

VINCENNES, Ind. – An artist talk and reception featuring Katherine Kuharic has been rescheduled for Sept. 13 at Vincennes University’s Shircliff Gallery of Art from 11 a.m.-noon.

The gallery is currently exhibiting painting and drawings by Kuharic. The artist talk and reception was originally scheduled for Sept. 6.

Kuharic’s exhibition runs through Sept. 20.

Her work is a twisted synthesis of old-fashion American kitsch and contemporary concerns of gender, race, celebrity, and the status quo. Her images present simultaneously nostalgia and cynicism; a reanimation, equipped with disembodied limbs and organs, of what it means to be part of American culture. Her use of traditional patriotic symbols such as the American flag, cowboy hats and cornfields coupled with the carnival of unusual figures of tattooed nudes, giddy children and bizarre conglomerations of viscera distinguishes her works from other artists trying to capture America on canvas, if only by the sheer innovation of what they compound. Overall, Kuharic’s work marches a pack of strange curios across a jingoist stage, marrying effortlessly impressions of conventional and counter-culture.

A South Bend, Indiana native, Kuharic completed her Bachelor in Fine Arts in painting and drawing at Carnegie Mellon University, then studied with Robert Storr and Louise Bourgeois at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Kuharic has held faculty positions at Yale University School of Art, Washington University in St. Louis School of Art (where she served as coordinator for the Undergraduate and Graduate Painting Program), and at Hamilton College where she served two terms as the Kevin Kennedy Professor of Art. While at Hamilton, she developed the Senior Concentrator Program, the New York City Studio Tour, and the Visiting Artist Lecture Series. Kuharic’s work has been represented by the prestigious P.P.O.W. Gallery in New York for 25 years. Her work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions and publications. She was awarded the Richard Diebenkorn Fellowship at the San Francisco Art Institute and the Richard Diebenkorn Residency at the Headlands Center for the Arts in Sausalito, California in 2018.

The Shircliff Gallery of Art is located in Room A103 of the Shircliff Humanities Center at the corner of First and Harrison streets on the VU campus. Gallery hours are 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon-4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free.
