November 20, 2018 / Trailblazers cruise to win; remain undefeated

VINCENNES, Ind. -- Southeastern Illinois took an early 4-3 lead over Vincennes University within the first two minutes of Tuesday night’s District 16 matchup inside the VU P.E. Complex.

But the No. 6 Trailblazers quickly took over and dominated the over-matched Hawks the rest of the game.

VU ran away for a 110-59 romp, improving to 7-0 on the season and 2-0 against district foes.

“We just wanted to come out here play hard, come out with intensity and work on all those little details that you want for every game,” VU coach Todd Franklin said. “It’s all about us, not the other team. It’s not about the score really, we just want to come out here and try and shore up the little things that we need to work on and we will do the same thing when we come back out here in practice tomorrow.”

The Trailblazers led 52-27 at the half and used 57 percent shooting from the field in the second half to make sure Southeastern was unable to make any sort of comeback.

“They made us do some things differently (in the first half) with their zones and they have a little bit of length,” Franklin stated. “But we moved the ball around well and got a lot of open shots that we wanted. We probably should have made more shots than we did, but shooting 50 percent for the game is what you want.”

The ‘Blazers made just 9 of 27 shots from behind the arc, but finished the game 40-for-80 from the field.

Kevin Kangu and Kevin Kone paced seven Trailblazers in double figures, with 15 points apiece.

Lony Francis, Jr. added 14 points and nine rebounds, while Colton Sandage (14), Jordan Lyons (14), Cardell McGee (13) and George Dixon (12) all scored in double digits.

Chukka Mekkam dished out six assists, while Craig Porter blocked six shots.

“I thought everyone played well,” Franklin said. “There’s always little things you can be better at, but I thought we also did a lot of those little things right. We are right on pace for where we want to be.”

The Trailblazers are back in action over Thanksgiving break, playing in the Mineral Area Classic.

The Trailblazers play Roane State on Friday at 6 p.m. before wrapping up tournament play against Fort Scott on Saturday, 4 p.m.
