Appointments & Staff

Walk-in appointments may be accepted on an emergency basis, but scheduling an appointment will ensure that a counselor is available.

If a client is unable to attend a scheduled appointment, he or she is requested to call the Counseling Center and cancel as early as possible so that we can make that time available to others. Faculty and staff of the university can also assist a student in making an initial contact to the Counseling Center.

The Counseling Center staff has a strong commitment to maintaining the confidentiality of the information shared by clients. The Center complies with both state and federal laws regarding confidentiality as well as the ethical standards set forth by the American Psychological Association. Information discussed in counseling sessions customarily remains confidential unless the client indicates in writing that he or she wishes the information to be communicated to a specific person or office outside the VU Counseling Center.

Indiana law does require certain exceptions to confidentiality. For instance, counselors are required to report suspected abuse or neglect of children or invalids and to make appropriate notifications when there is imminent risk to physical health or safety. No record of counseling is made in academic transcripts. A confidential file separate from the academic record is established and maintained within the Counseling Center, and no information is released to anyone, including faculty, administration, or parents, without written consent.

The staff of the Counseling Center is committed to the highest standards of ethical practice. Counselors strive to provide a counseling experience that assists clients in the development of their potential in an atmosphere that recognizes diversity and freedom of individual choice.
