SURVEYING TECHNOLOGY, A.S.C.T.
ABOUT THIS DEGREE
As one of the few universities in the United States offering a degree in Surveying, the focus of Vincennes University's Surveying Technology Program is to encourage, educate and train, and expand the participation of younger individuals in a profession where the average age of practitioners is 55. As existing surveyors retire and technology advances, opportunities within the profession are more broad and numerous than ever.
With several degree options available, including a 1 year Certificate of Graduation, a 2 year Associate's of Science Career/Technical Degree, and a 4 year Surveying Management Technology Bachelor’s Degree, there is a way for anyone to get their start in the industry.
The small class sizes (12-16 students), access to current equipment and software, and many lab hours spent on real-world projects produce graduates that are highly sought after by industry employers. Internships and employment is facilitated by the program, with recent graduates reporting earning in the range of $18 - $22 an hour.
Graduates are qualified to start working with surveying/civil engineering firms or governmental agencies (typically under the supervision of a licensed surveyor or engineer), where it is reported they are promoted to crew leader positions within about 6 - 18 months. Career opportunities include:
- Field technicians who operate equipment such as automatic levels, standard and robotic total stations, survey-grade GPS, 3D laser scanners, and drones.
- Computer Aided Drafting technicians who perform designing and mapping.
- Researchers who research and analyze public and private documents as they pertain to surveying activities.
- A combination of all three.
Professional Licensure is possible upon meeting all state requirements. Once licensed, you may start your own surveying company or continue to work for others. The expected salary of newly licensed individuals can begin at approximately $60,000 a year and grow to $100,000+, depending on the company and location.
