VU celebrates 2023 National Apprenticeship Week

VINCENNES, Ind. – Indiana is among the states with the most apprenticeship programs and most active apprentices, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Vincennes University recognizes the importance of bridging the gap between academic knowledge and real-world skills.

Apprenticeship programs offer students in-demand, high-wage quality career paths. VU has developed comprehensive programs that allow students to gain valuable hands-on experience in their chosen fields, and they have the opportunity to turn these experiences into a degree from VU.

VU President Dr. Chuck Johnson said, “Apprenticeships bridge the gap between theory and practice, offering our students invaluable hands-on experiences that shape their skills and their futures. We are committed to cultivating industry partnerships and cultivating a learning environment where innovation meets application, preparing our students for a lifelong journey of meaningful contributions to their chosen fields.”

National Apprenticeship Week is a nationwide celebration showcasing the successes and values of apprenticeships during the week of Nov. 13-19, 2023. VU is celebrating the week with a series of stories and social posts featuring VU graduates and students.

Indiana had 18,552 active apprentices and 1,182 active programs in 2021, according to U.S. Department of Labor data. More than 241,000 new apprentices entered the national apprenticeship system that year. Nationwide, there were over 593,000 apprentices.

VU establishes strong partnerships with leading industries to provide apprenticeship opportunities. These collaborations ensure that VU students have access to real-world projects, experienced mentors, and cutting-edge technology. The programs are designed to align with industry demands and provide apprentices with a well-rounded education that goes beyond traditional classroom learning. Working alongside industry professionals enhances their understanding, prepares them for the challenges of the workforce, and strengthens their resumes.

VU was the first university to collaborate with the global leader Amazon in a first-of-its-kind robotics and automation apprenticeship program. VU launched the Mechatronics and Robotics Apprenticeship (MRA) program in 2019, and it provides training and education to up-skill selected Amazon applicants through immersive classroom learning, hands-on instruction, and on-the-job learning. VU also trains apprentices employed at Associated Builders & Contractors of Indiana/Kentucky companies and others interested in commercial and industrial industries. VU and Columbus, Ind.-based Cummins partner together in the Technician Apprentice Program (TAP) for students working toward an associate degree in Power Generation or Diesel.

These and other collaborations ensure that VU students have access to real-world projects, experienced mentors, and cutting-edge technology. The programs are designed to align with industry demands and provide apprentices with a well-rounded education that goes beyond traditional classroom learning. Working alongside industry professionals enhances their understanding, prepares them for the challenges of the workforce, and strengthens their resumes. Through apprenticeships, students have the chance to build a professional network early in their journey which opens doors for future career opportunities.
