Special & Unusual Circumstances A Special Circumstance is when a student or their family's financial situation has changed due to events like job loss, or if the student has unusual expenses like dependent care or a computer purchase. An Unusual Circumstance is a unique situation, such as parental abandonment or human trafficking, that impacts a dependent student's dependency status on the FAFSA, requiring them to either request a change in status, add parent information, or opt for a Parent Disavowal of Support to be eligible for aid.
Verification Sometimes the FAFSA system selects students for a verification process, which is just a way for the Department of Education to ensure accuracy. If you're selected, you'll need to submit documents like tax transcripts or W-2s as soon as possible to avoid delays in receiving your aid.
