Classes:
I teach a variety of Chemistry and Engineering courses. I am the coordinator for the second semester General Chemistry II course and usually teach General Chemistry I in the fall. I also am responsible for the chemistry of food preparation course exploring the intersection of chemistry and food. I am also in charge of the Chemical Engineering Calculations, and Engineering Thermodynamics courses. In between I also teach various chemistry lab courses.
Activities:
Within the University I am currently and have been previously involved with many committees – Updike Hall Safety, Updike Hall Recycling, Curriculum and Academic Affairs, University Core Curriculum, University Readmit, and Government Structures and Procedures committees as well as serving as a Faculty Senator. I have also served as department chair since 2017, leading the department in all its activities.
Outreach:
I coordinate our annual High School Lab Days outreach program. I have also hosted events in the College’s annual Science Fridays events. Recently, I have been involved in planning and implementing the Chemistry department’s outreach event for homeschool students in the spring.
Professional Activities:
I am involved with the American Chemical Society (ACS) and have served and am currently serving as the chair of the Wabash Valley local section. As a result of my involvement, we now receive an annual scholarship for one of our students through the ACS Wabash Valley Section. I am currently part of the Planning Committee for a 2027 ACS regional meeting to be held in Terre Haute Indiana.
Teaching Philosophy:
I believe experience and mistakes are essential for true learning. My goal is to create a classroom where students feel empowered to engage with the material and learn from the inevitable stumbles along the way. I want them to see that learning does not just happen during their school years but every day, in and out of the classroom. Every day and activity is an opportunity to learn and grow throughout their life.
Personal Interests:
Outside of teaching, I spend many hours planting and weeding in my herb and flower garden. I also enjoy cooking and baking making special meals and treats for my family and friends.
Why Vincennes University?
My own experience as a student at VU taught me the value of a close-knit learning community. I believe this supportive environment helps students thrive by minimizing the distractions that can be overwhelming at a large university. I am privileged to be a part of their journey, watching them grow immensely as they build a strong foundation for their future.
