Course Catalog

Historians describe and analyze past events through writing and research. They usually specialize in a country or geographic region, in a particular time period, or in a particular field such as social, intellectual, or political history. As with all social scientists, historians are concerned with some aspect of society, culture, or personality, and have a broad liberal arts background. Business and industry are looking for people with these attributes, which makes the history major a good candidate for management and executive positions.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Vincennes University History Department is to engage students in historiographical practices and knowledge in order to prepare students as they pursue degrees at transfer institutions, enter the labor force, and engage in life-long learning.  Students will exhibit comprehension of historical trends, theories, people, and events that impact modern history by examining various sources, applying research strategies, and demonstrating their understanding of that impact on the past and the present.

Program Learning Outcomes

Students who complete course work in the History program will be able to:

  • analyze source documents.

  • evaluate the causes and/or impact of historic events.

  • analyze the influence of key figures in history.

  • apply critical thinking skills to historical topics and issues.

The VU Advantage

  • Smaller class sizes, usually fewer than 30 students, which means easier access to professors.

  • Classes are conducted by qualified professors, not teaching assistants.

  • A better opportunity to master the fundamental principles that will carry you through your upper level classes.

  • Free tutoring.

  • The Social Science Learning Center which is a study skills laboratory staffed by full-time professionals.

  • Caring faculty with a personal approach to teaching.

We Want You to Succeed

All this professional attention is designed with one goal in mind - your academic success when you transfer to a four-year school to complete your baccalaureate degree.

A Living History Lesson

There's no better place to study history than in the city of Vincennes with its unique historical buildings and landmarks that date from its founding in 1732 Sieur de Vincennes. Why just read about history when you can live it?

What Our Students Say

“I obtained my Associates in History from Vincennes University. While my time at VU was short, it has positively impacted my life and career goals. When I began I was leaning towards becoming a history teacher but quickly decided against it. It was my advisor who suggested I take more political science classes due to my positive experiences in my previous classes. She could see what I couldn’t, my love for not only politics, but the science behind it. Furthermore, she suggested I apply for an internship program in Washington, D.C. With her help and a couple letters of recommendation from other professors in the history and political science department, I was chosen. Had it not been for my amazing professors and advisor in the history and political science department at VU, I never would have been able to spend 4 months in Washington, D.C. I met ambassadors, state and federal legislators, and CEOs of major companies among others. I even got to witness a presidential election firsthand. Yes, I obtained my Associates in History from Vincennes University but that was just the start. I found my purpose because of the dedication the professors, advisors, and other staff showed me, both in and out of the classroom. For all of these reasons, I am forever grateful.” Robin Graber
