VU Foundation announces Polk-Decker Scholarship recipients
VINCENNES, Ind. - The Vincennes University Foundation’s
Polk-Decker Scholarship Committee has announced the recipients of its
respected Polk-Decker Scholarship for the 2018-19 academic year. The
recipients are Kyle Blessinger and Grace Jones of Bicknell, Sarah
Farley of Lawrenceville, and William Carie and Spencer York of Vincennes.
Kyle Blessinger (Bicknell), son of Joe and Wynne Blessinger,
will major in Athletic Training. While at North Knox High School, he
participated in National Honor Society, soccer, basketball, Student
Council, FCA, SADD, and Spanish Club. He has volunteered with Shop
with a Cop, Spell Bowl, and many other activities through the National
Honor Society. He is employed at Smith’s Bowhunting and Taxidermy.
Grace Jones (Bicknell), daughter of Garry and Beverly Jones,
will major in Elementary Education. While at North Knox High School
she participated in Warriorettes (captain); Drama Club; French Club;
Track Manager; pep, jazz, and concert band; and athletic student
trainer. She has volunteered with the Bicknell First Baptist Church
Summer Lunch program as well as other programs at church, and at
ArtVenture Camp. She was employed with Bicknell Swimland.
Sarah Farley (Lawrenceville), daughter of Michael Farley and
Connie Farley, will major in Chemistry. While at South Knox High
School she participated in National Honor Society, Spanish Club, Key
Club, Art Honors Society, and the Prom Committee. She has volunteered
in the Good Samaritan Hospital Pharmacy and with her church’s nursery.
William Carie (Vincennes), son of Anthony and Nichole Carie,
will major in Agribusiness. While at South Knox High School he
participated in basketball, track and field, and Knox County 4-H where
he earned several awards. He is employed at his family’s farm, Maurice
Vieck and Sons, Inc.
Spencer York (Vincennes), son of Stephen and Michelle York,
will major in General Studies. While at Vincennes Lincoln High School
he was involved in football, wrestling, baseball, track, Cheer Block,
peer and tutoring, and he also volunteered in the local community. He
has been employed by Jay C Foods, Matthew Keller Farms, and Vincennes
Cub League.
ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP
The scholarships were made possible by the late Helen
Polk-Decker of Vincennes. Her love of learning was always a priority
and she left a legacy to see that others could fulfill their dreams of
higher education. The scholarships assure each recipient of funds for
college tuition, fees, and books for higher education studies each
year for four years.
In advancing the University’s missions of higher education and
community service, the VU Foundation, through the generosity of its
donors, administers endorsements and contributions established by
corporate and individual gifts, as designated. During the 2017-18
school year, the Foundation awarded in excess of $1.7 million dollars
in scholarships.
