Tax Treaty

Tax Treaty

The United States has income tax treaties with certain countries that may allow eligible international students to reduce or eliminate federal income tax on certain types of income.

If you are from a tax treaty country, you may qualify for special tax benefits.

What Is a Tax Treaty?

A tax treaty is an agreement between the United States and another country that helps prevent double taxation. Depending on the treaty, students may receive:

  • A partial or full exemption from federal income tax

  • A reduced tax rate on certain types of income

  • A limited dollar amount of income that is tax-free

Each treaty is different. Benefits vary by country and visa status.

Tax Identification Number

To claim tax treaty benefits, you must have a valid U.S. Tax Identification Number (TIN), such as:

  • A Social Security Number (SSN) (for students authorized to work), or
