January 15, 2019 / ‘Blazers slip in latest basketball poll

VINCENNES, Ind. - The stay at the top of the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Poll for the Vincennes University men’s basketball team was short-lived.

With a 98-96 overtime loss to District 16 foe Olney Central on Jan. 9, the ‘Blazers fell to No. 4 in the latest poll which was released on Tuesday afternoon.

VU received 357 points and did not receive a first-place vote for the first time in the last four polls.

South Plains (15-1) moved up a spot to take over the top spot with 397 points and 13 first-place votes. Florida Southwestern State (18-1) received the other three first-place votes and moved up one spot to No. 2 with 385 points.

Another District 16 opponent, John A. Logan (15-1) moved up two spots to No. 3. The Vols only loss this season came against VU.

Coffeyville (16-2) rounds out the top 5.

Olney Central (15-1) moved up to No. 22 after spending the last two polls receiving votes.

The loss to the Blue Knights ended VU’s 28-game home winning streak and marked the first time the Trailblazers suffered defeat this season.

VU (15-1) returns to the court for the first time since the loss to Olney Central when it travels to Southwestern Illinois on Wednesday.

Last Saturday’s game against Lewis and Clark was postponed due to adverse weather and will be made up on Monday, Jan. 28. The game will be played in Godfrey, Illinois and starts at 8 p.m. EST.
