JASPER, Ind. – Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and aging baby boomers, there is an urgent demand for nurses and nursing assistants. Vincennes University Jasper is helping fill the void by offering a new Health Care Professional Pre-Nursing Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Track Certificate.

The Health Care Professional Pre-Nursing CNA Track certificate is designed to expose students to a broad base of required general education courses and foundational skills related to nursing. No prerequisites are required.

“Nursing assistants are in demand in the healthcare system, and this certificate program will prepare the student for the demand of the nursing assistant workforce, and provide exposure to the healthcare environment and preparation for nursing school,” VU Jasper Department Chair of Nursing and Associate Professor Cassie Flock said.

Certified nursing assistants (CNAs) are on the front lines of the coronavirus battle performing critical hands-on care. Nursing assistants are also needed to care for the growing number of older individuals in nursing and residential care facilities.

Overall employment of nursing assistants is projected to grow nine percent from 2018 to 2028, faster than the average for all occupations, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Employment of registered nurses is projected to grow 12 percent, much faster than the average for all occupations.
