A Community Treasure for Music, Theatre, and Entertainment

VINCENNES, Ind. – Ask someone where they would expect to find a beautiful European-style theatre, live theatrical productions, concerts, student performances, and nationally recognized talent, and many would point to Indianapolis, Louisville, or St. Louis.

Few realize one of the region's cultural gems has been in Vincennes all along. The Red Skelton Performing Arts Center at Vincennes University isn't just a venue for students—it's a community treasure that welcomes audiences of all ages throughout the year.

Home to an 850-seat theatre designed in the style of a European opera house, The Red regularly hosts theatre productions, musical performances, guest artists, community events, and special presentations in an intimate setting where every seat offers an exceptional view.

Laughs and Art

The center also houses the Red Skelton Museum of American Comedy , an interactive museum dedicated to preserving the life, career, and legacy of the legendary comedian and Vincennes native.

It is also home to the Lothian and Red Skelton Gallery of Fine Art. The gallery showcases an extensive collection of artwork painted by Red Skelton in addition to exhibits highlighting his creativity as an author and composer.

Beginning in the 2026-27 academic year, all VU faculty, staff, and students enjoy free admission to the museum and gallery with a valid university ID. Admission covers up to two people per faculty or staff member, and one person per student.

Additionally, student welcome packets will include a free pass for family members to visit during opening weekend.

Students and Faculty Light Up the Stage

While many people know the center as the home of the Red Skelton Museum, fewer realize they can also enjoy affordable live entertainment produced by VU students, faculty, alumni, and community performers. VU's Performing Arts Department produces theatre performances each year while the Music Department presents concerts featuring bands, choirs, chamber ensembles, faculty recitals, and student musicians. Many performances are open to the public, and several concerts are offered free of charge.

The productions also reflect the University's commitment to community involvement. Recent performances have featured not only VU students but alumni playwrights and local community members sharing the stage together, creating opportunities for audiences to support both emerging artists and hometown talent.

74^th Season and Counting

The longstanding VU Alumni Association Community Series proudly features world-class musical tributes and performances by national and global touring artists also calls The Red home. This September, the series which is sponsored by the VU Alumni Association proudly kicks off its 74th season of phenomenal entertainment for the campus and surrounding community.

Beyond entertainment, attending a performance offers a chance to experience the arts in a welcoming environment without traveling to a major metropolitan area. Whether it's a dramatic play, a musical ensemble, or a special guest event, visitors can enjoy professional-quality performances close to home.
