For Erika Minard, the outdoors is both a passion and a calling. The Conservation Law Enforcement program enabled her to push her boundaries through participation in "The Green Mile," a challenging field exercise, and expand her skills through volunteer work. After completing a hands-on summer internship, the Albany, Indiana, native is ready to step into a career focused on protecting people and the environment.

Below, Erika reflects on her VU experiences, shares her career aspirations, what makes her a Trailblazer, and more.

Why did you choose VU?

“My classes at VU are very immersive. The Conservation Law Enforcement program's saying is, "Not All Classrooms Have Four Walls", which means that in the majority of my classes, I am getting hands-on experience. VU is the only college in Indiana that offers a Conservation Law Enforcement Degree, so that impacted my decision on choosing VU.”

Why did you choose to study Conservation Law Enforcement?

“I enjoy outdoor sports and activities such as hunting and fishing, and I have always wanted to do law enforcement. Conservation Law Enforcement is the perfect mix between the two. I am passionate about protecting our natural resources and allowing people and generations to come to enjoy the outdoors. I believe it is important to enforce laws to ensure safety, fairness, and enjoyment for all.”

What are your plans after VU?

“I plan to apply to Ohio and Indiana Conservation Law Enforcement after graduation, and possibly other states as well. My goal is to protect the natural resources and citizens, regardless of which state I end up in.”

Share your best experiences at VU.

“Some of my best experiences at VU have been with the Conservation Law Enforcement program and within my classes. For example, "The Green Mile" is performed during the Conservation Law Enforcement 2 class, which is a 24-hour challenge that challenges you mentally and physically. Some of my other experiences, such as volunteering with the club at Martin State Forest, have allowed me and other students to expand our knowledge outside of the classroom. I completed an internship through VU Conservation Law Enforcement over the summer, and that provided me with various opportunities.

What makes you a Trailblazer?

“My adaptability and perseverance are what make me a Trailblazer.”
