Tim Garrett links VU's past, present, and future

Tim Garrett '87, proud owner of Jay’s Autoworld in Sullivan, Indiana since 1990, traces his success back to Vincennes University. After earning his associate degree in General Studies, he built a thriving business that’s stood the test of time.
“VU was the right start for operating a successful business of 40 years that continues to grow,” Tim says. He credits VU's dedicated faculty, strong programs, and campus involvement opportunities for opening important networking doors.
In this Alumni Spotlight Q&A, Tim shares why VU is an incredibly special place for him.
Q: How did VU prepare you for your career?
"I felt my teachers had real-life experiences in the fields they taught and respected the students."
Q: What advice would you give current VU students or those considering enrolling?
"VU is a small school with lots of quality programs and teachers that care. You can participate on campus with clubs and open more doors for future networking. Take any dual credit courses in high school you can, and it will give you a head start and save on the cost of your education."
Q: What are you most grateful for from your time at Vincennes University?
"The people I met, both faculty and friends."
Q: Why is VU a special place to you?
"VU is a very special place for me. Our family has been involved with VU for many generations. My great grandfather, Mayor Joseph Kimmell; grandfather, Curt Kimmell; uncle Joseph Kimmell II; and myself have all been involved in one form or another in supporting VU in various volunteer and philanthropical positions over the years. Our family was proud to contribute to the University in continuing the legacy of Kimmell Park and upgrading the park to be part of the Vincennes Campus."
Q: Tell us about the next generation of Trailblazers in your family.
"I was excited to see the expansion and bachelor opportunities now at VU. It made it an easy choice for our son to continue the VU tradition as he obtains his bachelor's degree in Business Administration at VU, preparing him for his master's in Business or Public Administration. His time on campus has been amazing. From the new French Quarter Apartments to the many club opportunities helping the community, he feels involved and is an active part of campus."
Q: Anything else we should know?
"VU is a great value in education."
