Determined and unstoppable, Lawana Dorsey is ready to celebrate a well-earned achievement as a member of the VU Class of 2026. Originally from Gary, Indiana, she pursued a career in nursing and enrolled in college at 18. However, Lawana put her goals on hold to support her family, with her path taking her through motherhood and working full-time as a qualified medication aide (QMA).

She never wavered in her dream of earning a college degree. Juggling a demanding work schedule and a commute from Terre Haute, Indiana, Lawana showed incredible perseverance excelling in her studies.

Participating in the Vincennes Campus Commencement holds special meaning for her because she didn't get to walk across the stage at her high school graduation. Decades later, Lawana proudly stands as a VU graduate and is excited to finally wear a graduation cap and gown and accept her college degree.

Transitioning from her incredible journey to the Commencement stage, Lawana reflects below on her dream of achieving a college degree, her VU experience, her career plans, and what makes her a Trailblazer.

Why did you want to earn a college degree?
“To become a better version of me.”

Why did you choose VU?
“I have had family and friends attend VU and have heard only good things about it. Their graduation rate was one of the higher ones in Indiana.”

How has VU helped you achieve your dream of earning a college degree?
“VU in general has been a big help, from my advisor who has helped me choose the appropriate classes to help me become successful, and the instructors who worked with me until the assignment was understood.”

Describe your emotions as you accomplish your dream of receiving a college degree.
“I am super excited about graduating and walking across that stage. This would be my first time walking across a stage for graduation, and I have been waiting for this day.”

What are your plans after graduating from VU?
“My goal is to continue to follow the steps of starting my own Assisted Living Quarters, and after graduation, I will be focusing my time on my business.”

What makes you a Trailblazer?
“A Trailblazer is one who shows GRIT and is willing to do what it takes, no matter how hard it may seem. One who shows dedication and resilience and is not afraid to seek help along the way.”
