For Savannah Wilson, graduating from VU with an associate degree in Music is just the beginning of a lifelong mission. From a young age, the Bedford, Indiana, native set her sights on music education because she believes there is no higher calling than fostering creativity in others. She is eager to step into the classroom and begin sharing the gift of music with people across all generations.

Below, Savannah reflects on her VU journey, shares her transfer plans, what makes her a Trailblazer, and more.

Why did you choose VU?

“I chose VU because the music staff was so kind to me at my audition, and the cost of tuition and housing was unbeatable. I also received a talent scholarship that positively influenced my decision.”

Why did you major in Music?

“I have known for a long time that I wanted to major in music education. I cannot imagine a better life than sharing the gift of music with kids and adults around. The student-to-faculty ratio at VU also showed me the possibility of having a lot of my professors’ attention. So, any questions that I have or extra help I need, I can always find a music professor ready to help very quickly.”

Describe your best experiences as a VU student.

“My second year as a whole has been the best year of my life. I have developed a strong understanding of music theory, taken lessons on six different instruments, and met some of my best friends. I would not trade my time at VU for the world.”

What are your plans after graduating from VU?

“After I graduate from VU, I will be attending Indiana State University to pursue a bachelor's degree in music education. After that, I plan to get my master's in music performance, and then teach at the collegiate level and continue my love for performing.”

Tell us about your honors and awards as a VU student.

“In the spring of 2025, I was awarded "The Outstanding Freshman Music Major Award," and I have made the Dean's List every semester. Additionally, I have been a recipient of the Alexandra Clark and Oscar Dunn Scholarship my entire time at VU. For the 2025-2026 academic school year, I received the Cornelius Music Scholarship. All of these scholarships were awarded by the VU Performing Arts Department.”

What makes you a Trailblazer?

“I will be the first person in my family to attend college and receive a degree. I also have supported myself during college by working at the Red Skelton Theater. As well as getting experience in my field by working with local junior and senior high schools, such as Vincennes Clark Middle School and Springs Valley Junior-Senior High School. I also have performed locally for the Art Space Gallery here in Vincennes and with VU staffer Wade Baker for The Front Porch Music Festival in Washington, Indiana.”
