Zoey Rinesmith believes every frame tells a story. As an award-winning photographer and a Graphic Design Occupational-Photography student from Palestine, Illinois, she uses her creative eye to lead both the Photo Club and Creative Writing Club as their president. She is a central figure in shaping the student experience at VU, and her commitment to campus life shines through her work as a resident assistant and Student Government Association financial coordinator. Zoey is a prime example of a student who leads by example and creates with purpose.

Below, Zoey reflects on her VU journey, shares her career plans, what makes her a Trailblazer, and more.

Why did you choose VU?

“I chose to attend VU after visiting the campus and realizing how amazing the campus, faculty and staff, and the opportunities VU had that were so close to home!”

Why did you choose to study Graphic Design with a concentration in Photography?

“I knew that I wanted to stay close and still pursue my passion in photography, and VU was and still is the perfect fit for that!”

Describe your best experiences as a VU student.

“I have had so many good experiences here at VU, but I think some of the best have been the trips to SPE (Society for Photographic Education) with the Photo Club! Being able to interact and speak with colleagues and other students who are also just as jazzed about photography is such a rewarding and inspiring experience!”

What are your plans after graduating from VU?
“After graduating, I plan to take a few years off while pursuing my photography business, and then in a year or two go back to school and get my (Bachelor’s of Fine Art), followed by my (Master’s of Fine Arts) to pursue teaching photography.”

Describe your VU honors and awards.

“I have been on the Dean’s List every semester so far and have received a Blue and Gold Cord for being president of Creative Writing Club and Photo Club, Award of Excellence in Photography as a first year, and third place in Photo II in the Juried Student Exhibition last year. I have also been awarded first place in Video and an Award of Excellence as a second year Photography student in this year’s Student Art Show!”

What makes you a Trailblazer?

“I am a Trailblazer because I am not afraid to try something new.”
