FROM SELF-DOUBT TO A BRIGHTER FUTURE: STEPHENIE'S STORY

For years, Stephenie Miley struggled with something that couldn’t be seen from the outside: a lack of confidence in herself and her abilities. After leaving high school during her sophomore year, Stephenie spent years believing she wasn’t capable of accomplishing anything meaningful. She made choices that led her down the wrong path and began to lose sight of the future she wanted for herself and her daughter, Sophia. Then, about three
years ago, Stephenie experienced what felt like one of the lowest points of her life when she was arrested. But what could have remained a painful chapter in her story became a turning point.

Stephenie began reflecting on her life and the future she wanted to create. She prayed each day for the strength to become a better person and build a better life for herself and her daughter. She knew she wanted more, but she wasn’t sure where to begin. That first step was deciding to pursue her High School Equivalency. While searching for opportunities, Stephenie shared some of her goals with Vicmary and her GED teacher, Mary. They connected her with the opportunity to earn her certification as a CNA through Vincennes University Adult Basic Education. Although she was scared and still doubted her abilities, Stephenie decided to take a chance on herself.

For eight months, she balanced work and school while remaining committed to her goals. There were days when she felt overwhelmed and questioned whether she could keep going. But she did. She kept showing up. She kept pushing forward. And, little by little, she began to believe in herself again. Today, Stephenie can proudly say that she has earned both her High School Equivalency and her CNA certification. For Stephenie, these accomplishments represent much more than certificates. They represent growth, perseverance, faith, and a second chance. Most importantly, they proved to her that her past did not have to determine her future.

Her proudest moment came when she realized she had accomplished goals she once believed were impossible. “For the first time in a long time, I truly believed in myself.” Adult education gave Stephenie more than an educational opportunity. It helped her rebuild her confidence, continue her education, and pursue a career in healthcare. It also gave her the opportunity to set an example for her daughter and show her that learning, growth, and pursuing your dreams never have an expiration date. And Stephenie isn’t stopping with her CNA. She plans to pursue certifications in phlebotomy and QMA as she continues building her career in healthcare. Her goal is to keep helping people, keep setting goals, and keep growing while making a difference in the lives of others. Most of all, she wants her daughter to see that anything is possible with hard work and determination. Stephenie’s message to anyone who feels stuck, defeated, or unworthy is simple: “Don’t let your past define your future. My lowest point in life became the starting point for my greatest comeback!”
