April 8, 2019 / Huge comeback lifts Trailblazer baseball to win over nationally-ranked Lincoln Land
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The Vincennes University baseball team came from behind and defeated nationally-ranked Lincoln Land 11-9 in seven innings on Sunday in Game Four of a Mid-West Athletic Conference Series.
The Trailblazers scored eight unanswered runs over the final two innings.
They were down 9-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning. They scored two runs in the top of the sixth, then added six runs in the top of the seventh.
VU rapped out nine hits in the contest against Lincoln Land, No 18 in the NJCAA Division II national poll.
Sophomore Treven Madden and Ryan Robison recorded two hits apiece. Madden hit a home run, scored three runs and had a RBI. Robison doubled and drove in one run.
Sophomore Tyler Estes drove in three runs and scored twice. Sophomore Caleb Helms and freshman Max Flock drove in two RBIs apiece.
Sophomore Walker Paris and freshman Sean Becker both scored two runs.
Paris earned the win out of the bullpen as he allowed two hits and struck out four in three innings. He gave up two runs.
Freshman Noah Woodward started on the mound. He gave up four runs on three hits, two walks and two strikeouts in the first 2.1 innings.
In Game One on Sunday, Lincoln Land beat the Trailblazers 10-0 in five innings.
VU sophomore Kavan Crowell struck out four batters in 3.1 innings. He allowed six hits and six runs.
Sophomore Bricem Thompson hit a double for one of the Trailblazers’ four hits.
The Trailblazers went 1-3 in the series.
VU challenged Lincoln Land in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday. That matchup lasted 11 innings and ended with Lincoln Land edging the Traiblazers 3-2.
VU scored in the fourth and fifth innings. The Trailblazers’ one run in the fifth knotted the game at 2-all. It remained deadlocked until Lincoln Land scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 11th inning.
Sophomore Luke Lancaster was solid in relief. He fanned eight batters in 5.2 innings after relieving freshman Kacey Cheek. Lancaster collected one walk and allowed one run on four hits.
Robison and sophomore Brian Campbell had RBIs.
In Game Two of Saturday’s doubleheader, VU fell 3-0 in seven innings.
Robison took the loss with four strikeouts and one walk in 4.1 innings. He allowed seven hits and three runs.
Thompson finished 2-for-3.
VU has a 16-15 overall record and is 5-7 in the MWAC.
The Trailblazers play a nine-inning non-conference contest against Frontier at Jerry Blemker Field on Tuesday at 6 p.m. EDT.
