Morris Hall

Morris Hall: Student Housing & Amenities

Morris Hall is an established three-story residence hall at Vincennes University, featuring two-person rooms with common areas for study and television. A computer lab and recreation room are available for student use.

  • Gender Layout: Each floor is designated as either all-male or all-female. Because the bathrooms are large, multi-stall "gang" style facilities are located in the center of the hallway, they are strictly single-gender to match the floor designation.

    • The main lobby, computer labs, and laundry rooms are co-ed and serve as the primary social hubs where all residents can hang out.

  • Amenities:

    • In-Suite: Rooms are approximately 16' x 11'. These are rectangular rooms with two of everything (beds, desks, etc.). Most students arrange their beds on opposite walls to create a central walkway. One extra-long twin bed (36" x 80"). These are usually adjustable in height, allowing you to "loft" them to fit your dresser or a mini-fridge underneath. A dresser and a closet area. Some rooms have built-in closets, while others use standalone wardrobes. A desk and desk chair. Curtains and blinds included

    • Common Areas: On-site laundry facilities (costs are usually included in housing fees) and a community kitchen. Features a recreation room and television lounges for student interaction.

    • Technology: Includes dedicated study lounges, a computer lab, and Wi-Fi. Students can bring:

      • Mini-Fridge: Allowed, but must be 4.4 cubic feet or smaller.

      • Microwave: Students often bring one for quick meals.

      • Comforts: A futon (if you loft your beds), a TV, and a fan (Morris is climate-controlled, but a fan helps with air circulation).

Location & Connectivity

Morris Hall is centrally located on campus, providing convenient access to essential student hubs:

  • Dining: Morris Hall is conveniently located right next to the Tecumseh Dining Center, making it one of the most accessible halls for meal times.

  • Recreation: It is a short walk to the Student Recreation Center, which houses weight rooms, basketball courts, and the aquatic center.

  • Academic Support: It is a short walk to the main academic buildings and resource centers, like the Shake Learning Resources Center (the campus library).

Historical Significance

Morris Hall is named for John Morris, a former slave and a charter member of Maria Creek Church located on the Vincennes University Campus. Morris was known for his contributions to African Americans in the American Frontier in the Northwest Territory.

  • Morris along with 12 other founders formed Mariah Creek Chapel, based on the Articles of Faith in 1809 which stated: “We believe that African slavery, as it exists in some parts of the United States, is unjust in its origin, oppressive in its consequences, and inconsistent with the spirit of the Gospel.”
