Dr. Aaron D. Bruck
Associate Professor of Chemistry
I am a proud alumnus of Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA where I earned my Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. I am also proud to call Purdue University my alma mater, getting my Ph.D there in Chemistry/Chemistry Education.
My primary focus is first-year chemistry courses. I am the primary coordinator for CHEM 105 (General Chemistry I) and CHEM 106 (General Chemistry II). I am a frequent lab instructor for those courses as well. In addition, I teach the Chemistry of Hazardous Materials course (CHEM 120) and occasionally teach some science education courses.
I am the current advisor for the Chemistry Club and its offshoot, the Journal Club. I also handle the primary advising duties for the Pre-Pharmacy program and the Secondary Science Education Bachelor's Degree programs. I am also a member of the American Chemical Society and have participated in local ACS events such as Program-in-a-box. On campus, I have worked with students in doing Fun Friday Science Days, High School Lab Days, pinning ceremonies for current students after completing their first year in the program, and white coat ceremonies for students who complete their chemistry associate's degrees.
My research is mostly action research on classroom practices. I helped to co-write a study on resource usage in General Chemistry I that was recently published in the Journal of College Science Teaching. I have also been active in adapting laboratory practices to research-based objectives and developing a lecture format in general chemistry that fuses active learning techniques into an integrated lecture format that students are most familiar with.
When I'm Not Teaching
When I'm not in the classroom or laboratory, I really enjoy spending time with my family and getting away from everything. I am a reader of history - my particular interest is the American Civil War, though I enjoy other times in American history as well. I am also a sports fan, particularly with basketball which is something I also like to play recreationally when the opportunity arises.
