Teaching & Work Experience
Currently serving as the chair of the Practical Nursing (PN) Program. Teaches the adult medical surgical courses as well as lab and clinical.
Taught in the VU ASN program for 25 years teaching nursing fundamentals, medical surgical, and the nursing issues course before becoming the chair of the PN program.
Professor Gardner views the classroom and learning as a time for students to develop critical thinking and to learn to "think like a nurse". Students are encouraged to reflect on clinical experiences and apply the nursing principles being studied to them.
Professor Gardner's clinical background includes over 34 years of nursing experience. Clinical background includes medical-surgical, the emergency room, as well as several years in nursing management as a nursing supervisor. Professor Gardner continues to work in the clinical area part time.
Professor Gardner finds that the best part of being a nurse is making a difference in a patient’s life and that of their family. Big or small it is amazing when a family member or patient runs into you years later and says - "that meant so much to us" or "I'm sure you don't remember but I was so afraid and you helped me so much”.
